Do you take multivitamins?
Did you know that they may actually be doing you more harm than good? You probably started taking vitamins as a kid with those delicious Flintstone chewables…maybe you’d stopped for a while, and as a health conscious person, you’ve likely started to think more about your health and wondered if you should begin taking vitamin supplements again. Well, you may be surprised by what the latest research shows. While nutritional research can seem confusing, with experts arguing about what’s really good for you. (Is coffee poisoning your brain or extending your lifespan?).
However, uniformly, the peer-reviewed, placebo-controlled scientific studies have repeatedly demonstrated that vitamin supplements not only doesn’t prevent disease, they likely significantly increase your risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and mortality. Nutritional researchers at the National Institutes of Health state, “The majority of scientific data available does not support the role of dietary supplements for improving health or preventing disease.” And yet, about half of Americans regularly take vitamin supplements. Half.
Some in very high dosages that are actually harmful. Harmful you say? You know what happens when an “antioxidant vitamin” donates its electron to “kill” a free radical?? IT becomes a free radical (yep-now it has a damaging unpaired electron). So, the very thing you’re taking to combat free radical damage is actually causing more free radical damage. That doesn’t make sense.
Do You Even Need Vitamins?
For the sake of this conversation, the word “vitamin” used here refers to synthetic, fractionated chemical compounds with the word “vitamin” in front—such as vitamin A, vitamin E, and vitamin C. Of course, prolonged deficiency of certain vitamins is not healthy, and in these instances, supplementation is necessary to restore health. The question though, is whether taking a daily vitamin supplement is necessarily good for healthy people. If you eat a diet full of fruits and vegetables, there’s an excellent probability that you’re taking in more than the recommended daily allowance of these vitamins. And even if you, unfortunately, prefer to eat less “wholesome and nutritious” processed foods, never fear, as these are largely well-fortified with vitamins and minerals. The bottom line is, if you take a vitamin supplement in addition to eating well and regularly consuming processed fortified beverages and foods, you’re probably taking in vitamins at much higher levels than the FDA and NIH recommend.
Why Can this Be Harmful?
To understand the dark side of overdoing it with vitamins, let’s consider the following…commercially available multivitamins often contain more than 100 percent of the US RDA of vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, and calcium, not to mention B vitamins. Add to that your “healthy protein shake” (fortified with vitamins) and your “energy drink” (jam-packed with synthetic vitamins). Unless you’re subsisting on potato chips and soda, you just don’t need these supplements. (Think about it…Do you run the generator when the power is on??).
Less is More
Here’s why taking too many vitamins is not such a good idea. Two extensive studies collected data on multivitamin supplementation in more than 400,000 patients found that individuals who took a daily multivitamin actually had an increased all-cause mortality rate. In another study, women who took vitamins C, E, beta-carotene, selenium, and zinc increased their risk of developing skin cancer. Hmm…Fortunately, more doctors are starting to read the latest research and beginning to recommend against vitamin supplementation as a matter of routine.
What SHOULD Your Nutritional Insurance Plan Be?
So, if taking vitamins is no longer a viable “nutritional insurance plan”, what should you do? The answer lies in activating your body’s OWN internal defence systems…the same ones that helped your younger body “bounce” back from injury (and that has been “slowly turned down” like the dimmer switch on a rheostat as you’ve marched through your twenties, thirties, and beyond).
